September Sigil: Freedom Beacon

“To be free of all authority, of your own and that of another, is to die to everything of yesterday, so that your mind is always fresh, always young, innocent, full of vigor and passion. It is only in that state that one learns and observes.

J. Krishnamurti

What a conundrum we have created for ourselves. There seems to be no way out of suffering, out of desiring and wanting. Even when we focus our efforts towards healing and deepening our understanding of ourselves, of life, of God, there is an aching in our souls that cannot be soothed away by the constructs of our thoughts. At least it seems that way.

Out of the two states of being available to the ego, the mastering of it seems to be the better option. We are then filled with vigor and purpose as we strive to be one with God, to be whole, to be sane. We delve into esoteric lore, learn about chakras, ley lines, we memorize zen koans, read copious amounts of Jung, Krishnamurti, and Rumi. We heal the wounds of the past and past lives, and we journey to the center of the earth under the guidance of our spirit animals. We forgive those who have wounded us, and we learn to love ourselves, our beauty, our ugliness and cowardice.

And still….the deep yearning and aching, the sense of isolation and loss.

“It cannot be so! I have put the time in, the effort, the dark nights of soul searching and yet, my child still suffers, the world still burns, and my partner still cries in the middle of the night. My heart is still broken!!”

Congratulations!! You are so close.

It is now time to let go. The wheel of samsara still turns, and many still have karmic lessons to learn.

“But I am a master now! There must be some reward at the end of this?”

It is true, you have reached the pinnacle of your craft. You are at the top the pyramid. You look below and see the glory and the ruin of your life. But the sun beckons.

But I have learned so much, gained so much wisdom and knowledge. Is it all for naught?”

Nothing is ever for naught. If one understands that all the accumulation of knowledge and understanding have to come to an ultimate conclusion.

That is, it can never make you happy. But it can contribute to your freedom.

The ultimate test is to truly let go of all that you think you know, all that you think you are. So your life is no longer a conceptual one, but a fully lived, embodied experience, free of pretense.

This age that is coming to an end is fighting fiercely for its own survival, all the while new contenders emerge from the woodwork to take its place. We will be challenged, over and over again. Forced to let go of preconceived notions of reality. Every hiding place of the ego will be revealed, and it will be cast out onto the street. We will come to the understanding that the ego cannot be in the driver’s seat any longer. Any action derived from your own understanding of logic or reason, from your limited perceptions will be doomed to fail.

“Well, that sucks! Thanks for the pep talk!”

Says the caterpillar that creates its own chrysalis, believing it to be its own tomb.

Until, after the long sleep, the sunlight penetrates the cocoon walls, the caterpillar begins to emerge. It begins to wake up.

The caterpillar cannot even begin to comprehend the butterfly that it will eventually become, it can only act on its nature.

As will you, until the inevitable change occurs.

“Okay, I accept the truth of what you are saying. But, can I find a way through it, a way to bring some level of grace to this change?”

Yes. By simply accepting and honoring the changes that already naturally occur in the world. You are not who you were ten years ago. You are not who you were five minutes ago. Invite the burgeoning new awareness in, and let it be a guest in your home. You cannot force it to reveal itself nor can you resist its influence. You can only welcome it in. It is your primordial self incarnate, and it is your fullest and highest potential realized. And it can only exist in the present moment.

Memorize this sigil, and go to a place of nature. Or somewhere quiet and still enough to let your inner nature emerge. Then bring the sigil up in your mind. Let it speak to you, and reveal its secrets to you. This is a sigil that can accompany you for as long as you need it.

Whenever you tire of the world, your place in it, or your self-limiting ways, visualize this sigil, and take flight.

“The eagle in its flight does not leave a mark.”

J. Krishnamurti
